Few studies have compared these methods, and cobalamin CBLA has received less-focused scrutiny than older methods have received in the past. In 2000, a study showing that a CBLA failed to detect many low cobalamin levels2 was disputed by the manufacturer.3 A later article attributed similar

Oral Cobalamin Therapy for the Patient with Biermer’s Disease
Biermer’s disease also called: Addison’s anemia or in old textbooks, pernicious anemia, is an autoimmune disease, caused by impaired absorption of cobalamin (vitamin B12) owing to the neutralization of intrinsic factor action in the setting of immune atrophic gastritis [1]. In adults and elderly patients, this form of megaloblastic anemia is one of the leading causes of cobalamin deficiency, wi...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of oral cyanocobalamin therapy in the treatment of cobalamin (vitamin B(12))-deficient anemia. DATA SOURCES Primary and review articles were identified by MEDLINE search (1966-May 2000) and through secondary sources. DATA SYNTHESIS Cobalamin-deficient anemia is among the most common diagnoses in older populations. Cobalamin-deficient anemia may be diagnosed as ...

We have read with interest Hvas and Nexo’s very informative update article about the diagnosis and treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency. Authors also stated that vitamin B12 deficiency is an important public health problem. It is well known that diagnostic approach to this deficiency is very important to reveal the underlying cause that is usually attributed to malabsorption. Carmel et al.’s fou...

A 71-year-old man with diabetes mellitus visited our hospital with complaints of anorexia and weight loss (12 kg/3 months). He had megaloblastic anemia, cobalamin level was low, and autoantibody to intrinsic factor was positive. He was treated with intramuscular cyanocobalamin, and he was able to consume meals. GAD autoantibody and ICA were positive, and he was diagnosed with slowly progressive...
متن کاملCobalamin-dependent Formation of Leucine and /?-Leucine by Rat and Human Tissue
Circulating levels of 8-leucine are elevated in the cobalamin-deficient state of pernicious anemia. Levels of leucine, on the other hand, are much lower. It is proposed that leucine 2,3-aminomutase, the cobalamindependent enzyme that catalyzes the interconversion of leucine and 8-leucine, is the affected enzyme in pernicious anemia and causes these results by preventing the synthesis of leucine...
